MEKE MENETE – “LONELY SEXY DEATH”

Once the possibilities of the internet to subvert notions of identity were perceived as empowering, apparently offering the opportunity to shift the locus of power through a detachment of body and mind. But time and usage have not served these possibilities well.

The potential to be whoever you want to be is not liberating, but intimidating. Where there are no fences, there is no security. So we’re left with one of two things: to fall back on tried and tested norms that result in some hyperreal form of self, or retreat into ambiguity, hidden from the world, undefined, out of reach, ghosts of reality lingering in the ether.

Become unreal versions of self or give into uncertainty and fear? Meke Menete make no definite decision and straddle that line that runs between.
