“You Must Be My Friend has a long-winded gestation story. on a tour i did on the east coast of the USA with the brilliant David Vassilotti, of Merchandise and solo renown, we stopped in at the house that Carson from Merchandise was living in at the time in Washington DC. the house was equipped with a very cool basement studio. on our night off there we had a bonkers weird disco session, and after David and his girlfriend had retired, Carson and i jammed out on drums and a very strangely tuned guitar in the style of (according to CC) Skip Spence. the ‘You Must Be My Friend’ improv stuck in my mind and the song went through many incarnations, mostly in the acoustic sphere, but i just couldn’t land it. i think that the song needed a discordance of format, and robotic pop turned out to be the clothing that felt comfortable to deliver this song in. anyhoo, please enjoy!” David West

‘You Must Be My Friend’, the second song to be taken from David West’s new album, is available to hear now, accompanied by a video made by DW himself. Jolly In The Bush is out 4th March.
