On 23rd April, CYMBALS will release their new record, Sideways, Sometimes, through Tough Love. Written, recorded and produced over five days on Lightship 95, a boat moored in the Thames, the EP has a cleaner, more coherent feel than last year’s debut album, Unlearn.
Enlisting a fourth member, Neil Gillespie took over from Sean on drums, while Sean returned to his first instrument, bass, filling out the space in their sound. Drawing on Yo La Tengo and New Order, the songs follow a pattern, forming what the band says is “a circle describing a moment in their lives.”
Sideways, Sometimes is available on CD, LP and download. A limited edition run of 300 white 12″ vinyl (with a free download code) will be released for Record Store Day on 21st April. The Tough Love Shop has a limited number of these records available for pre-order to guarantee that fans are able to get hold of a copy. Continuing the theme for somewhat special artwork, the band enlisted Robin Hulme, a fabric designer for Liberty, to create a one-off design that will grace the cover of the record.

Today, CYMBALS have issued their first new material since releasing their debut album back in May. “Intense Kids” is available to download as a free MP3 below, or can be streamed on Youtube here.
Having just released their debut album Unlearn, in the early summer months of this year the band returned to the studio to work on new music. Camping out on The Lightship 95 – a boat that doubles as a studio – for five days, they wrote and recorded from scratch eight songs, of which “Intense Kids” is the first to be released. Sitting somewhere between Yo La Tengo and New Order, it’s what the band call “downhome disco”, and perfectly captures their distinct brand of melancholic euphoria.
Since that recording session, the band have now expanded to a four piece, with Sean swapping drums for bass (his main instrument) and Neil now stepping in behind the kit. They play their first London show as a four-piece downstairs at Electricity Showrooms. It will be a floor show, with the band playing amongst the crowd. Support comes from Woman’s Hour, with Slime, Dreamtrak and ParadYse DJs. More info here.
CYMBALS have been featured in Vice’s Noisey series, filmed aboard Lightship 95 as part of our Watery Domestic party last month. The band were filmed playing four songs, including two new tracks, “No Bad Decisions” and “Intense Kids”, as well as two tracks taken from their debut album, “Single Printed Name” and “Jane”.
In related news, there are only 3 copies of the limited 12″ pressing of Unlearn available. The record is also available digitally through all the usual sources and all buy links are below:
